Begin with the whole plan
Prescription weight-management medicines can be part of a plan that also includes nutrition, activity and behavior changes. Whether a medicine is appropriate depends on the person, the product and the clinical assessment. A BMI calculation alone is not a prescription decision.
Start by describing what you want to improve in daily life. Ask which health measures will be followed alongside weight and how the plan can work with your routine.
Compare the practical details
NIDDK recommends considering medical history, other medicines, side effects and cost when discussing options. Ask for the exact medicine name, its intended use and the alternatives. Understand who will prescribe, which pharmacy will dispense it and who will answer questions.
Questions worth writing down
- Why is this option being considered for me?
- What benefits and side effects should we discuss?
- What is the full cost, including visits and follow-up?
- What happens if availability, coverage or my circumstances change?
Discuss the long term early
Ask how progress will be reviewed and what happens if treatment is stopped. Weight regain can occur after stopping medication. A useful conversation includes ongoing support, reasons to adjust the plan and how to keep follow-up manageable.
Bring up pregnancy plans, changes in health and any new medicines with the treating clinician. Product-specific advice belongs with the clinician and pharmacist, rather than a general online guide.
Check the finished product
FDA has raised concerns about unapproved GLP-1 products sold for weight loss. Compounded products are not FDA approved. Do not assume that a familiar ingredient name makes every version equivalent; ask the prescriber and pharmacist to explain the exact product.
