  In general, western treatments for many dermatological conditions are limited, however powerful. There are many diseases that are barely treatable at all, or have a very difficult prognosis. Fortunately there are a lot of Chinese medicine folk and external remedies for the same or similar dermatological problems that were identified a long time ago in China.  Not every condition is easily treated, but many are.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

    The reason why Chinese Medicine is able to be effective when Biomedicine is not is that TCM does not use suppression only, but also employs supplementation and expelling/draining or “clearing” methods.  In general, corticosteroids rely heavily on the patient’s body’s system and are suppressing. Anti-fungals, too, to a degree are suppressive.

 

    But sometimes a patient is actually experiencing their dermatological condition due to a dietary excess (poor diet) or deficiency (poor nutrition). The body in one patient may respond to these things with an internal condition, but in some body types, it will respond with outward signs like acne, eczema/dermatitis, psoriasis, or difficult to treat fungi.  

 

    The Chinese Medicine way to treat this is a combination treatment of internal “clearing” (of bacterial heat, deficiency heat, or toxic heat), along with topical applications of herbs that range from soothing/softening to anti-parasitic and/or toxic.  When we say toxic this means some are not meant to be ingested** and some could be simply somewhat toxic.  These herbs are very effective at killing excess patterns like fungi or bacteria or parasites that cling to hair or burrow into the skin.

 

    We do not discourage the use of dermatologist’s prescriptions rather encourage patients to use a mixture of internal and external herbs (folk remedies) and creams, antibiotics, anti-fungals, and steroids (whatever the prescription may be), to achieve the best synergistic effect. For patients and doctors concerned with drug-herb interactions, we should remind them that we cross-reference every patient medicine with herbal formulas prior to prescriptions and work  earnestly with medical doctors to achieve maximal therapeutic effect.
